Out-of-Band Phone Authentication

The user’s phone is called and they are prompted to press a # (pound) key, enter a PIN or a One Time Password (OTP) on the keypad. Security can be enhanced further by having the user speak a pass phrase (voice biometrics). The advantage of this is that the credentials are kept out-of-band and any phone, either a cell phone, a home phone or work phone can be used.

Out-of-Band Push Authentication

A Push Notification is sent to a user’s cell phone which invokes an app on the phone and a popup appears. There are three methods that can be used - (1) The user presses either the Accept or Deny buttons, (2) The user enters a PIN or passcode, or (3) The user verifies using their fingerprint.

One Time Password Delivery

A One Time Password is sent to either the user’s cellphone or their email address. The OTP can be sent to the cell phone as an SMS, or a Push Notification or spoken to the user. The received OTP is entered into the application for authentication.
